Does acupuncture hurt?
The sensations that patients experience during acupuncture vary according to each individual. Some patients do not feel any sensations while others may feel a brief ache or heaviness in the area being needled. Some points are more sensitive than others. Generally, patients describe the sensations as fleeting and the treatment experience as deeply relaxing.

Are the needles safe?
Yes. Sterile disposable needles are used. They are used only one time and then disposed of immediately.

How do I get the most out of each treatment?
Avoid excessive caffeine in coffee, tea, or sodas during the day of treatment. Avoid intense physical activity before or after your scheduled treatment. After treatment, your experience can be enhanced by adding rest and relaxation. Prior to treatment, do not use perfume or after-shave lotion.

Do I have to be ill to benefit from acupuncture?
Absolutely not. Many patients come for regular treatments to achieve increased effectiveness and enjoyment in life. Acupuncture can also be a powerful preventative measure to keep you healthy throughout the year.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
A growing number of insurance companies will reimburse for acupuncture treatments. Consult your insurer to determine the terms of coverage on your policy. Here are a few questions to ask:

Will my plan cover acupuncture?
How many visits are covered per calendar year?
Do I need a referral from a primary care physician?
Do I have a co-pay?
Do I have a deductible? If yes, has it been met?

How frequently do I need to receive treatments to receive the benefits?
The frequency of treatments varies with each individual. Please feel free to call me to discuss your concerns and explore a possible plan of treatment. (The section of this website titled “Getting Started” addresses the treatment sequence in more depth).

Are there different styles of acupuncture?
There are many styles of acupuncture. The primary distinction exists within the diagnostic process and the corresponding treatment planning process. To learn more about the distinction between various forms of acupuncture, please feel free to contact me.

What is the cost?
Treatment sessions last between 45 minutes and one hour and cost $80.00. The only exception is the first treatment, which includes an initial medical history intake, a Chinese physical exam and a treatment. In addition, I do a full work-up of your treatment needs before your second visit. The cost of this session is $160.00.
